News from Briarcliff Press Conference
Atlanta, GA, December 18, 2013 — Martha Pacini, COVE President
Ron McCauley, COVE Cityhood Committee Chair, and I attended the City of Briarcliff Initiative’s (COBI) press conference announcing the results of their study from the Carl Vinson Institute at UGA.
The press conference was held behind the Chili’s in Toco Hills, a location that was probably chosen because of its inclusion in the Lakeside proposal. In short, the Carl Vinson (CV) study confirms that the City of Briarcliff would be economically strong, and in fact, the surplus anticipated for the City of Briarcliff is 50% greater than that projected for the City of Lakeside in its study. The City of Tucker study is expected to be released later this week.
Other points from the press conference:
- The COBI leadership has been in conversation with Tucker, but neither COBI nor Tucker have had any significant, formal conversations with Lakeside. COBI is hopeful that the release of these studies will encourage representatives from all three city-hood initiatives and DeKalb County to discuss this and try to resolve the tremendous overlaps.
- The five services the City of Briarcliff proposes to provide are (1) Police/Public Safety; (2) Planning/Zoning; (3) Parks & Recreation; (4) Permitting; and (5) Potholes (roads & sidewalks). They call them the 5 P’s.
- The numbers in the study are conservative and based on 2012 values.
- COBI believes that the legislature would prefer for citizens of these areas to work out the overlapping boundaries before going to the legislature.
